The vertical overlap of the incisor teeth. It is described as average, when the upper incisors overlap the lower incisors by a third of their height, reduced when the upper incisors overlap the lower incisors by less than a third of their height, or increased when the upper incisors overlap the lower incisors by more than a third of their height.
The horizontal relationship of the incisor teeth. It is described as average, when the upper incisors overlap the lower incisors horizontally by 1mm.
An overbite can also be described a scomplete where there is contact between the lower incisors and the junction of the upper incisors with the palate.
Where the lower incisors make no contact with the opposing upper incisorsor the palatal mucosa when the buccal segment teeth are in occlusion.
When the upper incisors are behind the lower incisors.
Can be unilateral, bilateral. When upper dental arch is too narrow and/or lower dental arch is too wide, the upper teeth are on the palatal side of the lower teeth.
When the mesial buccal cusp of the upper first molar line up with the buccal groove of the lower first molar
When the mesial buccal cusp of the upper first molar is mesial to the buccal groove of the lower first molar
When the meisal buccal cusp of theupper first molar is distal to the buccal groove of the lower first molar
*mesial: to the front
*distal: to the back
Clefts occur along many planes of the face as a result of faults or defects in development or maturation of embryonic processes. The most important of the facial clefts is the cleft lip and cleft palate. The unilateral cleft lip involves only one side of the lip; the bilateral, both sides of the lip (hare lip). The cleft palate may exhibit wide variation in the degree of severity and involvement of tissue. There may be a cleft of both thehard and soft palates, cleft of the soft palate only, cleft of the hard palate, alveolar ridge and lip (complete cleft). The patient with cleft palate and cleft ridge exhibits a large defect in the roof of the palate, with direct opening into the nasal cavity. Frequently a disturbance in the dental structures, the teeth maybe missing, deformed, displaced or divided, thus producing supernumerary teeth.
